Jet Stream - what you don't know about Jet stream

Saturday, 28 October 2017

🌍🌎🌏🌐👋 everyone I am ‘Goutam’ from "Geography 🌍 " today I discuss about "Jet Stream". The meaning of the English word “Jet” is “exit in high speed from narrow line”. According to meteorology, in troposphere there is a cold high speed wind flows west to east in narrow line like a snake which is called “Jet Stream”.

In 1883 the meteorologist first found high speed wind in the sky after a great disaster in a volcano. Then in 1920 Japanese meteorologist 'Wasaburo Oishi' is the next founder of the high speed wind. After 19 years later Germany meteorologist 'Heinrich Seilkopf' has given a name of the high speed wind - "Jet Stream".

  1.          Types of Jet Stream
  2.         Origin of Jet Stream
  3.         Features of Jet Stream
  4.         Importance of Jet Stream

Though there are lot of topics on this subject but I compose in brief these four topics today.

● Types of Jet Stream :-

There exist three types of jet stream -

1. Polar jet stream :-

Warm subtropical wind and cold pole wind when combine together there originate a one kind of warm weather for that a jet stream can reveal. It is exit 30°-60° N, in winter time the high speed is 200-400 kilometer /hour. And in the south hemisphere it is surrounded only around Antarctica. Among these the pole jet stream is the powerful wind and it is called primary jet stream. This jet stream divided ferret cell and the polar cell.

2. Subtropical jet stream :-

In subtropical area it blows almost 25°-30° axle on 10-16 km. altitude. This jet stream exit more heighest position but it is too powerlessness. It divided Halley cell and ferrel cell.

3. Tropical jet stream :-

Mostly in north hemisphere near Africa and south-east Asia it seems. It flows west to east for that it is called easterly jet stream.

● Origin of Jet Stream :-

First two kind if density wind combine together and then it show the difference of pressure for that there a mighty wind flows. For the difference in the transition zone, there this two kind of wind mix again and flow swiftly. Then according to the quality of the wind, the mighty wind  flows similarly of the two wind. Then between 30°-60° axle the both two mix and made a swift wind that is called Jet Stream. The jet stream actually one kind of geostrophic wind.

● Features of Jet Stream :-

  •    It is cold wind which is blow 10-12 km. height from the sea level and it pass through a narrow line like a snake.
  •       It is passes through west to east. Though it blow like a snake but it can start in any place or can divide in any position. Sometimes it gathers in one place or blow in opposite site.
  •     It is one kind of swift wind. The lowest speed of this wind is 92 km/hour and the highest speed of this wind is 500 km/h. According to the change of season "Jet Stream" also seems some difference in it blowing. The winter speed of "Jet Stream " is more powerful than the summer.
  •       The "Jet Stream" horizontally spread few kilometers and vertically it is spread less than 9 km.
  •     According to the axis this wind exit between 30°- 60° axle but seasonally it changes it's position.
  •     According to the position it divide into three parts - 1. Polar jet stream 2. Subtropical jet stream 3. Tropical jet stream. The pole jet stream is the powerful wind and it pass near the 7-12 km. altitude.
  •      The jet stream blows in which narrow zigzag path sometimes it become larger then it called Rossby Waves.

● Importance of jet stream :-

In lower area of atmosphere it seems no effects. According to the scientists in temperate area it crest cyclone. In many places it effects more destructive, heavy rainfall. In South-east Asia for the jet stream there subsist monsoon and mostly which airplanes go to the same direction these are economically save the time or fuel.

Though our science and technique are more developed today but it till unknown to us what jet stream effects on different weather and climate of the earth. The scientists till continue their research on this topic.
